The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is an independent membership organisation concerned principally with the education, training and assessment of Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and Doctors who are involved in the surgical care of patients.  Founded in 1505, the College currently has a membership approaching 25,000 in approximately 100 countries throughout the world.

About the Role

Working within the Office of the President and Chief Executive, the post holder has responsibility for leading the team of staff to enable the development of the College’s membership, including engaging with and servicing the needs of the membership, membership analysis and growth/retention, market research and organizing ceremonial occasions. These responsibilities are undertaken in close collaboration with the clinicians assigned to assist with the various areas of work, particularly with the Honorary Secretary of the College who is the Office-Bearer with responsibility for membership matters.

There may be requirement, occasionally, for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work, particularly to our Birmingham Regional Office, and to other parts of the UK when meetings are held external to Edinburgh.

Experience/Qualifications/Key Skills

This is a superb opportunity for an individual who enjoys dealing with a wide range of people and devising ways of managing and improving the membership experience.  The College is about to implement a new Customer Relationship Management system and this will form a core part of the role.  The successful candidate will be an experienced manager who has strategic insight, analytical capability, a track record of delivery and a real attention to detail.

Educated to degree level, ideally with evidence of post-qualifying professional development, you will have proven experience of customer service management and development, leading a team, and sound knowledge of data management and control. 

You will be a self-starter who is willing to take on new challenges.  Excellent communication and team working skills, the ability to form good relationships internally and externally, and flexibility are all essential qualities.  You will be a proficient user of the MS Office suite and have the ability to manage competing demands.  A high level of professionalism and diplomacy is required for the role, as is discretion and the ability to handle sensitive data.
