Research Associate in Microscopy

The Advanced Microscopy and Biophotonics Groups at Heriot-Watt are based within the multidisciplinary Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. Our joint goal is to develop novel optical imaging platforms and analysis methods to aid in the study of cellular function, growth and development. We specialize in multi-dimensional imaging, photon counting, time resolved imaging and optical trapping.

This new position will contribute to a multi-disciplinary, multi-institute EPSRC funded project to develop a novel imaging platform to characterise and study 3D cell cultures in all dimensions, over an extended duration and in real time. This final instrument will combine novel multi-plane imaging, light sheet imaging, optical trapping and adaptive optics to create a system able to fully probe the micro-rheology of 3D cell cultures. At Heriot-Watt we will develop the multi-plane aspect for three and four-dimensional imaging and micro-rheology. We will  translate previous work on particle tracking into a system for optical trapping and light sheet imaging. The ideal candidate would therefore have a background in microscopy, optics or photonics and ideally with some experience of cellular imaging and image processing. The post holder will be expected to work closely with collaborators at University of Nottingham and University of Glasgow, who are developing the other aspects of the final instrument. 

The position is available for 24 months.

You will have a PhD, or equivalent, in physics, engineering or microscopy together with experience in the design and implementation of optical systems; experience in optics, optical microscopy or photonics and experience with image processing or relevant programming skills.
