Title: Correlating volume and surface features in additively manufactured metal parts

Project description:

Porosity analysis is of great value in additive manufacturing and provides significant insight for researchers working on process development. For the industrialist, however, measurement of parts using current X-ray tomography techniques is expensive and slow. If it is possible to correlate internal features (such as porosity) to external features (such as those present on a surface), it may be possible to infer information about a part volume from the process fingerprint remaining on the part surface. The aim of the research for this PhD is to develop a measurement pipeline to algorithmically determine surface features in a repeatable manner, and to apply this pipeline to a series of additive metal samples. Measurement of surface features in a repeatable manner will allow for the acquisition of a deep understanding of surface geometry, and, through correlation to porosity data acquired using X-ray measurements, could allow for the detection and prevention of subsurface defects during processing.

The project will be supervised by Prof. Richard Leach and an industrial sponsor.
