Research Associate - Polymer Chemist

The post will be based at the Centre for Biomaterials, Division of Surgery and Interventional Science, University College London at Royal Free Hospital Campus (Hampstead, London) and provides an excellent opportunity to work with a prestigious team of scientists, engineers and surgeons in a highly dynamic and stimulating environment.

The post is available as a result of the award of an EPSRC grant on implantable soft robotics. The project is focused on development of novel functional polymeric materials, design and fabrication of soft devices & robotics for restoration of physiological function. The successful applicant will join a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative group working on biomaterials, artificial soft implants and implantable electronics for surgical tissue and organ reconstruction. 

This post is funded for 4 years in the first instance.

The postholder must have a PhD degree in polymer/organic chemistry, polymer science and engineering, polymer composites/nanocomposites or in a relevant discipline or have equivalent professional experience. Experience in syntheses of responsive and functional polymers hydrogels or polymer composites/nanocomposites for soft robotics or biomedical devices, design, fabrication and characterisation of implantable sensors, actuators and devices are all essential. The postholder must have a proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality original research, design and plan laboratory experiments, work both independently and collaboratively, write scientific reports clearly and quickly and demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
