Salary scale: £36,800 - £44,220 per annum

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join Professor Rutherford’s laboratory in the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London. The aim of the project is to investigate chlorophyll f –containing Photosystem II. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the project, including isolation of species, cyanobacterial culture, protein purification, and biophysical and biochemical characterization.

Main duties & responsibilities:

  • To perform research work that fulfils the requirements of the grant objective
  • To contribute to producing independent and original research within the group
  • To interpret and present research data and results
  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times
  • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences.
  • To write of the findings for publication in refereed journals
  • To advise and assist other staff and students within the area of expertise
  • To contribute to writing bids for research grants
  • To take responsibility for organising resources and effective decision making in support of research

You must have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics or a related subject.
  • Experience of biophysical methods
  • Experience of photosystem II biochemistry, molecular enzymology and structure/function
  • Experience of microbiological methods

It would be advantageous if you also had:

  • Experience with molecular biological techniques
  • Experience of microscopy, confocal, EM, cryo-EM etc
  • Experience of cyanobacterial culture

You must also be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to follow protocols and learn new techniques in a precise and skilled manner
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to deal with a wide range of people
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication
  • A high level analytical capability and a creative approach to problem-solving
  • The ability to work independently and show initiative with research.
  • The ability to develop and apply new concepts
  • The ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines.

This is a full time, fixed term position available for up to 24 months based at the South Kensington Campus

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,238 - £34,040 per annum.
