During 2017-2018, leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the English Faculty is running a major digital project entitled ‘Lest We Forget’. This is based on crowd-sourcing projects we have been running for several years (originally the Great War Archive, and then Europeana 1914-1918 in which we asked members of the public to share items they held related to the First World War on an web-based platform. Items were collected either online (people could just upload material and agree to the terms and conditions) or more importantly through digital collection days held around Europe. These were akin to an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ style of event in which people brought their items to a venue on a certain day and they were recorded and digitised there and then.

‘Lest We Forget’ is running a national campaign to support schools and local volunteers to run their own digital collection days around the UK (we already have run four successful and have a further eight in the pipeline). The project provides supporting documentation and training allowing local communities to do it themselves. The project is led by Dr Stuart Lee but will involve a team of people across the University as well as external organisations. Recently, due to funding received from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are now working in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to expand and extend the Lest We Forget project to the end of June 2019 involving several high profile national events.

The main duties of the Research Co-ordinator will be liaising with the CWGC to fulfil our responsibilities to the national project: running training events for digital champions, supporting events remotely, attending four large national events around the UK, overseeing the activities of the contract staff in the team, helping publicising the project, and assisting with managing and updating the project plan.

The post is offered from 1 October (or as soon as possible after this date), for a fixed-term of 10 months. The role is 2 days a week (0.4 FTE) but this can be split across mornings and afternoons as suits the candidate.

Applicants should be computer literate, highly organised, and able to think on their feet. Ideally they will have had some project management experience and/or experience in organising events, and with an interest in the subject area. For full details of the role and requirements, please see the further particulars.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 31 August 2018. Interviews will be held in Oxford in the week beginning 17 September 2018.

Closing Date: 31-AUG-2018 12:00
