The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. We are consistently ranked amongst the top 30 universities in the UK, with 75 per cent of research activity at the University considered as world leading or internationally excellent. Since its inception, the University has forged its own path and to this day it retains a culture that is wedded to creativity, universal values, international engagement and excellence in education and research. We have just launched a new strategic framework “Sussex 2025” which reimagines the pioneering spirit of the original purpose of the University, but does so for new times and a new generation. A key component of this framework focusses on “researching with impact”; challenging convention through an interdisciplinary, experimental approach, with a constant commitment to excellence.
It is to this exciting context that the University is looking to appoint a Director of Research and Enterprise. A key member of the Chief Operating Officer’s senior team, and with a direct line into the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), the Director will provide a first-class range of support services to academics whilst underpinning the delivery of the research strategy, facilitating growth in research and enterprise income to the University. With a team of 50-60 and a central budget of circa £3 million, the Director will provide effective leadership that focusses on quality and efficiency with a customer-focussed approach. The Director will be responsible for developing relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including the Head of Schools, fellow Directors of Professional Services, the Sussex Innovation Centre, UKRI and major charitable trusts.
Our next Director of Research and Enterprise will be a dynamic and accomplished leader, with an ability to inspire high-performing and multidisciplinary teams. This role will require a skilled communicator and influencer, be able to inspire confidence internally and to become a trusted ambassador externally. The Director will be resilient, driven and have a commitment to excellence. Candidates will be passionate about research and will personally align with Sussex’s strategic vision and values. Sussex is committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels and in all forms. The University wishes to encourage applications that will continue to strengthen the diversity of its leadership.
