The Agriculture and Food Development Authority - Teagasc

Location: Teagasc, Mellows Campus, Athenry. Co. Galway.         

Grade/Salary: Research Officer, with a starting salary of €33,056 per annum.  The current salary scale is €33,056 to €64,337.

Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82.  Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc).

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.

Post Type: Permanent

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function:             

The successful candidate will be required to develop, lead and implement a research programme

with emphasis on some or all of the following:

  • Lead Teagasc sheep BETTER farm programme, including data analysis and dissemination.
  • As part of the Sheep BETTER farm programme develop a Hill sheep farm research programme which will include a research on sheep meat quality

The research programme will be an integral part of the wider Teagasc sheep research programme which is aimed at increasing the performance of ewes and lambs on grazed grass, and the wider Teagasc livestock programmes. The successful candidate will lead the Teagasc sheep BETTTER farm programme including data analysis and dissemination. The candidate will also have responsibility for Teagasc Hill BETTER Farm programme including the elucidation of factors affecting the performance of hill sheep in a range of environments. This will also include the evaluation of different options for finishing of hill lambs and the resultant meat quality. 

Person Specification

Note: The ‘Essential’ qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined below are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the shortlisting process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI Honours Level 8 degree in Agricultural Science, Veterinary Science or a related discipline.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline.

Note: While a PhD is an essential requirement for this post, equivalent research experience may be deemed acceptable solely at the discretion of the Director of Teagasc.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-doctoral experience in Animal nutrition, sheep production, grassland science or genetics would be a distinct advantage.
