The project: The aim of this project is to design and fabricate functionally graded ceramic/polymer and ceramic/metal composites and to investigate their high strain rate behaviours and ballistic performance through an integrated modelling and experimental approach. The materials development will involve two aspects. The first and key aspect is the development of ceramic preforms with graded-porosity, aligned and continuous pore microstructures. The second aspect is the development of techniques for liquid infiltration of polymers and lightweight metals into the porous ceramic preforms. The microstructures of the produced ceramic preforms and final ceramic/polymer and ceramic/metal composites will be fully characterised using micro-CT, SEM/EDX and XRD. Mechanical testing under both low speed impact and high strain rate will be characterised. Modelling for benchmark and design will be performed using approximated analytical models to guide the fabrication and optimisation of the materials.
UK/EU applicants, who have a first class or 2:1 or equivalent honours degree, or MSc or MPhil in materials and mechanical engineering subject, are encouraged to apply.
