PhD Studentship: Novel functionally graded ceramic composites for ballistic protection

University of Bristol - Biomaterials Engineering Group, Bristol Dental School

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Bristol
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students
Funding amount: £16,000
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 8th August 2018
Closes: 20th August 2018

Funding amount c.a. £16k stipend plus tuition fees

Candidate requirements:  UK/EU nationals due to funding

The project:  The aim of this project is to design and fabricate functionally graded ceramic/polymer and ceramic/metal composites and to investigate their high strain rate behaviours and ballistic performance through an integrated modelling and experimental approach. The materials development will involve two aspects. The first and key aspect is the development of ceramic preforms with graded-porosity, aligned and continuous pore microstructures. The second aspect is the development of techniques for liquid infiltration of polymers and lightweight metals into the porous ceramic preforms. The microstructures of the produced ceramic preforms and final ceramic/polymer and ceramic/metal composites will be fully characterised using micro-CT, SEM/EDX and XRD. Mechanical testing under both low speed impact and high strain rate will be characterised. Modelling for benchmark and design will be performed using approximated analytical models to guide the fabrication and optimisation of the materials.

UK/EU applicants, who have a first class or 2:1 or equivalent honours degree, or MSc or MPhil in materials and mechanical engineering subject, are encouraged to apply.

Please send your CV to before you apply. The project will start in October 2018.

How to apply: Please make an online application for this project at Please select <Oral & dental science> on the Programme Choice page. You will be prompted to enter details of the studentship in the Funding and Research Details sections of the form.
