Joyce Cook was responsible for establishing a teaching institution and a set of qualifications used to prepare nursing staff to care for residents of retirement homes. Her example and support in turn was the foundation of the family’s contribution to the elder care sector.

The University of Auckland is seeking to appoint an internationally renowned and connected scholar to the new, endowed Joyce Cook Chair in Ageing Well. The successful individual will develop a vision and provide leadership to a multi-disciplinary approach to improve the quality of life of our ageing populations in New Zealand and internationally.

New Zealand’s top ranked Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences already hosts a number of globally recognised scholars active in this area, from a range of disciplines including nursing, medicine, population health, general practice and public health. Ageing Well has been identified as one of eleven priority National Science Challenges thus enhancing momentum in national research collaborations.

The Chair will demonstrate personal credibility and the skills to provide leadership and continue to build their research profile, nationally and internationally, and to extend the reach and influence of University of Auckland research in this area to Government, policy-makers, health care and aged care service providers. The Chair will be comfortable having both an academic and public profile to enhance better outcomes in the care for elderly with a particular outreach into Māori and Pacific communities. The opportunity is open to those from relevant disciplinary backgrounds.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s pre-eminent research-led University. Established in 1883, it is an international centre of learning and academic excellence. Based in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland, the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is located on the Grafton Campus adjacent to Auckland City Hospital. Ranked in the top 100 world universities in the medical disciplines, the Faculty provides professional undergraduate degrees across a range of disciplines as well as a strong and diverse range of post-graduate and PhD programmes.

New Zealand's natural environment and subtropical climate, stable political and social environment, and good medical and health services are the top three contributing factors for Auckland retaining its ranking as third best city in the world (out of 450) for quality of life in the Mercer Quality of Living Index.
