A unique opportunity has arisen for a motivated systems biologist to join the metabolic modelling team to extend Healx’s portfolio of bioinformatic drug repositioning capabilities.

Main duties and responsibilities

You will support our patient group clients by modelling and interpreting the effects of disease on metabolism, using a variety of experimental data types. You will also lead the development of key infrastructure by creating a resource of drug metabolic profiles, using both automated refinement methods and manual curation, to facilitate drug repurposing.

Skills and experience

You will be an experienced systems biologist, bioinformatician or computational biochemist with a proven track record of implementing new methods, developing workflows and performing metabolic pathways data analysis. You will have a strong background in investigating human metabolism and disease. You will share a passion for translational research and a desire to get effective treatments to patients with unmet clinical need.

Essential requirements

PhD in computational biology, systems biology or biochemistry/metabolism

Experience in using constraint-based metabolic models, for example by using the COBRA toolbox and Flux Balance Analysis-based techniques

Accomplished user of programming languages such as Matlab and Python

Proven record of applying metabolomic modelling to the elucidation of novel pharmacological or disease insights

Knowledge of human metabolism and experience in biochemical pathway analysis


Experience working with ‘omics data types, including gene expression, protein and metabolite quantification

Experience working with clinical and pharmacological data types, for example therapeutic compound data, medical disorders, patient histories and outcomes

Excellent communicator of scientific ideas - for presentations, reports and scientific papers
