Applications are invited for the post of the StoryFutures Technician based in the College’s new Centre for Digital Creativity. The Centre for Digital Creativity is an exciting new initiative to link cutting-edge research and teaching within the College with high profile creative industries partners. StoryFutures is an ambitious and exciting project within the Centre that will provide an R&D base for screen industries to meet the challenge of next-generation storytelling, producing compelling content for emerging creative technologies.
The StoryFutures Technician will work as part of a team facilitate creative and collaborative development of immersive story experiences through provision of technical support, data management, operational skills training, and specialist advisory support to the Centre’s research students, staff and partners.
The post holder will have specialist knowledge in video games production and will have a key responsibility for the technical and operational management of the Centre’s video game design facilities, including resource scheduling, management of physical and digital assets, ensuring effective project communication between partners, and playing a leading role in the planning, acquisition, and provision of specialist resources. You will have skills that span the gaming production pipeline such as coding, motion capture, virtual/augmented/mixed reality, animation, visual effects, digital artwork, sound recording/ sound design, and quality control.
The post holder will provide hands on support for the Centre’s facilities, working with other technicians to deliver teaching and research programmes in immersive production. As such the ideal post holder will possess a broad knowledge of immersive pre-production and post production equipment and processes. You will be a practical problem solver capable of basic fault diagnosis, repair and operation for maintaining and upgrading gaming workstations and related equipment across the audiovisual production chain – with a particular emphasis on interactive productions, including immersive, gaming and online.
The post holder must have excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise with diverse stakeholders, including those from Higher Education and Creative Industries. As such, the ideal candidate will have experience of working on immersive and related interactive productions in either universities or creative industries.
The role sits within the new Centre for Digital Creativity (CDC), which brings together Media, Computer Science, Drama, Psychology, Management, Geography and Electronic Engineering to deliver StoryFutures. Royal Holloway is ranked in the top 10 or 20 departments in the UK for all these disciplines, providing a dynamic environment that connects creative industries with world leading researchers.
This is a full-time 4 year post, available from 01 October 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is a post with strong potential for contract extension. This post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London. The successful applicant will spend significant time liaising with industry partners across the local region, including central London. An attractive relocation package is available.
