About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s premier University with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence and employs over 7600 permanent staff supporting over 60,000 students. The Centre for Translational Data Science (CTDS) is a pan-University, multidisciplinary, multi-faculty centre, central to the University’s Multidisciplinary Initiative (MDI) strategy.   The Centre has been created to transform the process of discovery in all academic areas through the development and application of advanced data analytics and machine learning methods. The objective of CTDS is to use data science to drive new and transformational advances by forming multidisciplinary partnerships with researchers, to build scale, human capacity and translational outcomes for the University of Sydney and Australia. The CTDS is closely aligned with the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH), which supports CTDS strategic goals through the provision of research infrastructure.

The position of Academic Director leads the refinement and ongoing operations of a world-class, internationally recognised, University-wide centre for research and education excellence and is assisted by a team befitting the maturity of the collaborative entity. It is a conduit into the University leadership to contribute to University decision making, which is reflected back in the MDI strategies and operational plans.

  • provide people leadership and management to all staff (including culture, mission, workforce planning, and compliance)
  • be responsible for external engagement with relevant sectors, particularly at the global level, and ensure continuing and deep engagement with the alumni community
