West Dean College has an international reputation for excellence in practice-based education in conservation and creative arts with a specific focus on craft skills. The College’s programmes range from introductory short courses to degrees at post graduate level arranged into two academic Schools; Arts and Conservation.
The Colleges extensive technical resources encompass facilities for traditional crafts from blacksmithing and ceramics through to drawing, painting and printmaking. Additionally, the College provides resources for contemporary techniques including digital creative work and a laboratory for the scientific analysis of materials as well as an IT infrastructure to meet the expectations of today’s higher education learners. The College is part of The Edward James Foundation, a charitable educational trust located on the 6,400 acre West Dean Estate in beautiful West Sussex countryside near Chichester.
As part of an ambitious 10 year strategic plan, the College has recently reviewed its approach to providing technical resources and support, aiming to create a consistent approach for students and staff across a diverse range of existing studios, workshops and IT and to inform the development of new workshops and facilities which are part of a major capital building programme. The College is seeking to recruit a new Head of Technical Resources to lead this process.
Reporting to the Director of Education you will provide effective management of the technical resources and IT infrastructure across the College alongside providing expertise and vision for the future. You will manage a team of ten staff with a range of specialist and non-specialist skills ensuring workshops and IT resources are provided in a timely, appropriate and safe way to support the seven day a week operation of the College.
To be successful in this role you will have recent and relevant higher education experience in a technical resources management role, with wide ranging knowledge of digital and traditional workshops including health and safety. You will be a strong leader with experience of taking teams through periods of change, achieving strategic and operational objectives.
