We’re looking for an experienced writer and editor to assist in the production of high-quality content to explain, promote, and advocate the work of EMBL. In this role you will work closely with a team of writers and communicators to inform and engage EMBL’s key audiences.

Your role

Day-to-day activities will include:

  • Carrying out background research and conducting interviews with scientists, other EMBL staff members, and alumni.
  • Writing content for a variety of channels including the EMBL news website (, EMBL publications such as magazine, and social media.
  • Editing and subediting content produced by other staff members, ensuring that it meets EMBL guidelines for voice, tone, and style.
  • Managing content online.
  • Repackaging content for specific channels and audiences.
  • Taking an active role in the development of new content.

You have

  • Excellent English writing and general communication skills.
  • Ideally two years’ experience in a writing, editing, or proofreading role.
  • Ability to understand complex scientific concepts and articulate these in engaging ways appropriate to a variety of target audiences.
  • A high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to respond positively to critical feedback, and to give constructive feedback to other staff members.

You might also have

  • Experience of writing for social media.
  • Experience of working on video or other multimedia content.
  • Experience in a supervisory role.
  • A background in science would be highly advantageous.

As part of EMBL’s mission, Administration provides services to all personnel members across six sites in order to promote molecular biology across Europe, and to create a centre of excellence for leading molecular biologists. Administrative positions are connected to but not dependent on scientific work and knowledge.
