Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to a project, as part of an EPSRC/NIHR Global Challenge Research Fund programme aimed at developing novel imaging based diagnostic and engagement technologies in Africa (https://tinyurl.com/y6u5z6f7).

You will primarily work with Professor Jon Cooper and Dr. Julien Reboud on the development of a 3D printed smartphone-based lens-free imaging platform integrated with acoustic technology for field testing of both parasitic infectious and non-communicable diseases.

Background

The Advanced Diagnostics group in the Division of Biomedical Engineering have developed a portfolio of technologies to enable low-cost, low-power (no power or battery-powered), point-of-use advanced diagnostic devices (see e.g. www.epsrc.ac.uk/blog/paperinfectiousdiseases and www.glasgow.ac.uk/origami for details). The specific aspect of the project you will undertake will focus on the development of an imaged-based technology platform, using lens-free holography developed in partnership with Professor Ozcan’s group in UCLA and acoustic technologies developed in Glasgow, to introduce and prepare the sample for imaging. Importantly, you will work at the interface with biologists as well as with researchers from the Health Technology Assessment unit to evaluate the impact of the platforms you will develop, in the field. You will also have the opportunity to test the devices in Rwanda and Uganda.

This job requires a knowledge of imaging, prototyping and microfluidics and its application to sample processing and detection and a creative, practical aptitude to problem solving and the development of user friendly systems is required. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow. 

Standard Terms & Conditions

Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,210 -£39,610 per annum.

This post is full time at 35 hours per week and has funding until 31 January 2021.
