Research topic: Chemical Synthesis of 2D Materials for Opto-Electronics

Contract type: Fixed-term (2 years), with the possibility of extension.
Start date: 1 January, 2019
Semiconducting 2D monolayer materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, offer new opportunities in ultrathin transparent opto-electronics, such as photodetectors and light emitting devices. To realize large area devices the 2D materials will be grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The post holder will work on developing methods for the large area growth of 2D materials such as monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hBN. The research will develop methods for wafer scale production with control over doping, layer number, alloying, layer stacking. The epitaxial growth of vertical stacked heterostructures will be pursued for enhanced opto-electronic device performance.
The post holder is expected to work effectively with other members of a team under the supervision of Professor Jamie Warner to solve challenges in the broad field of large area transparent optoelectronics using all 2D materials.
The post holder will be expected to perform research in this area with the guidance and supervision of the host academic team. They will publish high quality papers based on the research results, and be capable of producing first drafts of papers independently. Opportunities for IP will be pursued in collaboration with Oxford University Innovation Ltd. There will be opportunities throughout to supervise the work of graduate research students.
