The Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging is installing a new state-of-the-art 7T pre-clinical MRI system to complement the Centre’s 3 and 7 Tesla human MRI capability. This is an exciting opportunity for an MRI Physics Support Scientist to be a vital contributor to the implementation and development of cutting-edge MRI physics techniques on a system supporting the pre-clinical neuroscience research at this Centre.

The postholder will implement and improve upon recent advances in MRI pulse sequences and image reconstruction; optimise scanning protocols for general use and specialist needs. They will be part of the Centre’s Physics Development Support Team, and work closely with the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) Physics group. They will be supported by the facility lab manager and animal technician and be jointly supervised by the Director of the Pre-Clinical Imaging facility and the Lead Physics Support Scientist.

They will work collaboratively with the facilities users on a variety of medium- and long-term projects that align with the Centre’s overall strategic vision. In addition, it is expected that some of the postholder’s work will lead to novel techniques and/or research findings leading to academic outputs.

The postholder will hold a PhD in physics or engineering using MRI with good knowledge of MR physics, including RF coils. Experience in MRI sequence development and programming, such as C++, Matlab and UNIX scripting will be essential. It would prove beneficial for the individual to have experience in pre-clinical MRI acquisition, including animal handling. They will be required to demonstrate that they have the ability to work with and communicate to scientists from a range of different backgrounds and are able to manage their time effectively, be attentive to detail and deliver on projects.

The post is full-time for a fixed-term until 27 April 2022 in the first instance.
