The Department of Law is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant from November 2018 to August 2019. This post is funded from NWO-HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area). Professor Eric Heinze serves as Project Leader for the four-nation, ten-member research consortium Memory Laws in European and Comparative Perspective (MELA). The MELA team examines ways in which law is used to promote preferred interpretations of history, thereby actively or subtly side-lining alternative views.

The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will participate in the authorship of scholarly publications, collaborate with team members on the development of the MELA website and support the organisation of project meetings, presentations and conferences.

The successful applicant must have:

  1. A PhD in the area of late-Ottoman history, law or literature;
  2. Peer-reviewed publications broadly concerning past and present debates relevant to questions concerning Armenian genocide, as well as post-Ottoman diasporic Turkish and Armenian minority communities in the West today;
  3. A record of academic and cultural collaborations with minorities in Turkey;
  4. Experience of international study or employment;
  5. Fundraising and administrative experience in the university, NGO or non-profit sector.

The post is full time and fixed-term. The starting salary will be £33,615 per annum pro rata inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, an interest-free season ticket loan and pension scheme.
