Information about the project:
This university PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to pursue advanced research within the Photon Science Institute and the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Manchester. The aim of the project is to investigate the ultrafast carrier dynamics of novel topological insulators and 2D materials to provide an in-depth characterisation of key device parameters, such as electron mobility and lifetime. The candidate will utilise terahertz spectroscopy and microscopy to extract the photoconductivity within the material with nanometre spatial resolution and sub-picosecond temporal resolution, measuring both the surface and bulk conductivity independently. They will also have the opportunity to explore device applications – both optoelectronic and spintronic- based on these novel materials, including terahertz detectors and modulators.
Qualifications applicants should have/expected to receive:
Due to funding restrictions candidates must be UK or EU citizens (EU residents must have been resident in the UK for 3 years) and have a 1st or 2i (UK or equivalent) undergraduate degree in a relevant Engineering subject, such as materials, modelling, signal processing and electronics, or Physics or Mathematics. The ideal candidate will have a passion for this research area and a strong interest in problem solving and experimental research. They will ideally also have some experimental and modelling experience and an interest in developing new experimental techniques.
