Queen Mary is a world-leading university providing world-class research-informed education across the disciplinary spectrum. In the most recent UK assessment of research activity in universities, Queen Mary was ranked 5th in the country amongst multi-faculty institutions for the proportion of our research outputs that were world-leading or internationally excellent. That world-leading research feeds directly into our teaching and, importantly, we have a genuine and strong track record in public engagement, with a commitment to shaping society, health and well-being and the economy. We were the first institution to be awarded the Engage Watermark Gold Award for excellence in public engagement.
We have a highly diverse student body for a Russell Group university, with 91% of our students from a state school background; 60% from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups; and 42% being the first from their family to go into Higher Education. We also celebrate the fact that we have 162 nationalities represented on our campuses. It is the diversity in our student profile, alongside our research excellence and our deep engagement with our communities, that makes Queen Mary unique and such a special place to work and study.
Queen Mary now wishes to appoint a new Vice-Principal (Education), who will be a full member of the Queen Mary Senior Executive. The appointee will build on the work being undertaken by the current interim postholder, Professor Stephanie Marshall, and will drive forward the education agenda at the University. They will be responsible for coordinating and leading all strands of teaching and learning activity across the institution, making sure that Queen Mary graduates are best-equipped for the demands of a challenging job market. With a genuine commitment to enriching the student experience, the new Vice-Principal will cultivate an enthusiasm for teaching and will promote a strong culture of student engagement. The postholder will raise the institution’s profile for education nationally and globally.
Queen Mary is seeking an experienced and visionary leader, who is passionate about teaching and learning, and who has an ability to take the education strategy to the next level. The appointee will have a credible research track-record and will understand the linkages between education and research. They will demonstrate strong achievements in teaching and learning leadership, and will understand the relevant UK policy environment and global trends. Candidates must be capable of having an impact across the organisation and of contributing to broader strategic decision-making at the highest level. Negotiation and persuasion skills will be critical, as will the ability to inspire. The successful candidate must bring energy, drive, pace of delivery and vision to this agenda. This is an opportunity to join an ambitious and driven leadership team and make a significant difference to a critical portfolio at a truly unique institution.
Queen Mary University of London is an equal opportunities employer and is actively seeking to increase the number of applications from candidates who are currently underrepresented at this level.
The closing date for applications is 18 January 2019.
