About the team/job
The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes of medical relevance. Our main research interest is on structures of large protein translocation systems and the investigation of molecular parameters leading to elastic properties in giant muscle proteins. We collaborate with several clinical groups with interests in infectious diseases, cancer and hereditary diseases. Most of our projects require integrative structural biology methods including X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy and complementary biophysical approaches, generally followed by functional experiments.
The development of novel therapeutic strategies is essential to combat the highly infectious pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The aim of this project is to structurally and functionally characterize a new toxin-antitoxin system (TA) with bactericidal activity in Mtb, to reach an in-depth mechanistic understanding of the toxin activity and molecular parameters that modulate the TA assembly. Together with an industrial partner, we will use this knowledge to chemically trigger the disassembly of the cidal toxin from its inactivating protein antidote using small molecule interference. The project provides an unique opportunity for you to work in a private/public partnership between academia and industry.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition and excellent communication skills, project coordination, and previously demonstrated expertise in X-ray crystallography, biochemistry and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, heterologous expression, protein purification).

Additional expertise in biochemistry (in vitro and cell-based assays) and cell biology (including imaging) would be advantageous.
