This project aims at identifying the effect of epigenetic modifications of lamins, a type of intermediate filaments, on structural and functional regulation of the nucleus. It will be implemented jointly by the Institute for Experimental cardiovascular Medicine (Prof Kohl) and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (Prof. Akhtar). You will use electron microscopic tomography to investigate nuclear 3D nano-structure, and nanoindentation to characterize nuclear mechanical properties. We expect: (i) an excellent MSc in Biology, Biophysics or a related field; (ii) hands-on knowledge of at least some of the following techniques: electron microscopy, tomographic imaging, AFM or nanoindentation, cell culture, qPCR; (iii) proof of ability to conduct and complete scientific research projects and (iv) excellent communication skills, including English language proficiency at level B2 or better.
