This fixed term post has been funded by the 2014-2020 Structural Funds programme supporting the EMFF funded Wales ACE project from 14/01/2019 to 13/1/2022. This position will be based at Swansea University's Singleton Campus.

Main Purpose of the Post

Applicants are invited for the position of Fixed Term Technician - Aquatic Research Facility (CSAR), in the College of Science, reference AC03216.

The post holder will join a team of researchers and technical staff in the Aquatic Research Facility within the Department of Biosciences, College of Science. The post will be part of a team of Academics, management staff and delivery staff who will implement the ‘Wales ACE’ operation.

The Aquatic Research Facility hosts a range of R&D projects on marine and freshwater fish, crustaceans, bivalves, as well as phytoplankton and zooplankton. The purpose of this post will be to assist in the delivery of the Wales ACE work packages in the Aquatic Research facility ensuring that all systems are running effectively and that all animals are cared for on a daily basis.

They will be expected to work well as part of a team of technical and research staff, and contribute to both the research and teaching aims of the Department of Biosciences. There will be a requirement to support systems and equipment servicing and maintenance as part of planned maintenance schedules and contributing to weekend rotas and out of hours alarm cover. Previous experience on all aspects of animal husbandry and welfare under an academic and research environment, particularly in relation to re-circulating aquaculture systems and fish husbandry, would be desirable.

The successful applicant will be required to contribute to all aspects of animal and micro-algal rearing for research and teaching, including: 

  1. Feeding
  2. Cleaning
  3. Grading
  4. Sample and data collection
  5. Water quality monitoring
  6. Health and survival monitoring

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

Qualification:

  • Applicants should have minimum of NVQ level 3 in a science, laboratory or technical subject or equivalent qualifications or experience in a technical or laboratory environment, together with excellent numeracy, IT and interpersonal skills.

 Experience:

  • Prior experience and competence in animal husbandry and welfare, preferably in relation to the rearing of fish in a university or research institution
  • Previous experience assisting students with the technical and logistic aspects of their research projects

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Highly methodical work approach
  • Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good numerical competency
  • Competent in I.T. skills, particularly data input and collation
