The Governing Body of University College intends to elect a new Master as Head of the College to succeed Sir Ivor Crewe who leaves office at the end of July 2020.

Founded in 1249, University College (or ‘Univ’ as it is known) is one of the oldest educational foundations in Oxford. It combines an ancient heritage with a thoroughly modern approach to fostering excellence in teaching and research. Its overriding focus is on academic endeavour at the highest standard. This is achieved through a strictly merit-based admission of students; tutorial teaching of undergraduates; a closely integrated graduate community; and a strong commitment to research in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Univ has been innovative in many ways. In widening access, through its Opportunity Programme, undergraduate bursaries, and postgraduate scholarships; in enhanced support for the tutorial system; and in research, including, for example, the establishment of the Blockchain Research Centre.

The Master chairs Univ’s Governing Body, with which ultimate decision-making authority rests. In so doing, the Master both contributes to the strategic decisions the College takes and facilitates the debate and discussion necessary to the achievement of a consensus. The Master is also the outward-facing leader of the College, within Oxford and to the wider world.

Univ seeks applications from suitably qualified women and men who have achieved recognition for their achievements. Candidates will demonstrate an affinity for the academic purpose of the College and possess the intellectual stature to command the respect of the Fellowship. They will be accomplished leaders and experience of fundraising and development will be an important advantage.
