About the team/job

Applications are invited for a post-doc position in the group of Dr. Christoph Merten, using cutting-edge microfluidic technology in the biomedical field. In particular, we are looking for a candidate who will work on large-scale monoclonal antibody screening. Making use of microfluidic technology these screens can be carried out on the single cell level at ultra high throughput (several hundred thousand primary B-cells can be assayed in a single experiment). Furthermore, the tiny assay volumes allow the use of samples that are hardly available in big quantities (e.g. samples from human donors). These conceptual advantages have resulted in numerous scientific publications and the establishment of the EMBL Spin-off Velabs Therapeutics. We now want to make use of the technology to derive antimicrobial antibodies against some of the most dangerous bacterial species.

Your role

You will be leading a scientific project with high impact in biomedical sciences. Your will learn how to use droplet-based microfluidic systems for the generation of antibodies that do not just bind to a given target, but rather inhibit its function. We expect the work to result in high impact scientific publications with you as a main author. Furthermore you might become an inventor on patents resulting from technology development.

You have

We are looking for outstanding applicants holding a university degree in immunology, microbiology or related fields. Good knowledge of English is required.

You might also have

Prior experience in microfluidics is advantageous, but not absolutely required.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises from a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

What else do I need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
