The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. Research Fellow 

Applications are invited for a part-time (75 %) position, with a contract of 30 months, starting preferably 1 March 2019. The position is designed for further professional qualification as defined in § 2 WissZeitVG (Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act). The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 13. 

The successful candidate will work as part of the project “Large-Scale Land Acquisitions, Rural Change and Social Conflict (LARCC)”, funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented in cooperation with the University of Osnabrück (Prof. Alexander De Juan).

The candidate should be willing and able to undertake substantial field research (potential cases: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Indonesia) and will

  • contribute to case studies;
  • contribute to the collection, processing, and analysis of quantitative household/village survey data;
  • based on these data, conduct original research pertaining to the effects of large-scale land acquisitions, rural change, and social conflict;
  • be an active member of the GIGA, affiliated to one of its Regional Institutes and to the relevant Research Programmes.

Your qualifications:

  • a very good university degree (Master or equivalent) in Economics, Political Science, or Peace and Conflict Studies
  • sound quantitative methodological skills,
  • very strong teamwork skills
  • English-language proficiency; knowledge of German is not a prerequisite

You are highly motivated, flexible, and able to work independently. 

Additional desired qualifications:

  • experience with handling household surveys
  • regional expertise and additional language skills relevant to research region(s)
  • previous field research experience

The GIGA strongly encourages concurrent work on a doctoral degree. The Research Fellow would become a member of the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
