We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant for the Gene Machines’ group, led by Professor Achilles Kapanidis. The group is well known for developing single-molecule fluorescence methods (Holden, Nature Meth. 2011;8:279; Crawford, Biophys J. 2013;105:2439) and applying them to DNA/RNA polymerases (Stracy et al, PNAS 2015; Duchi et al, Mol. Cell 2016; Dulin et al, Nature Comm. 2018, Duchi et al, Nucleic Acids Res. 2018).
The project is a BBSRC-funded collaboration with the groups of Meriem El Karoui (Edinburgh) and Mark Dillingham (Bristol) and focuses on single-molecule analysis of DNA repair via homologous recombination. You will perform single-molecule and super-resolution imaging of DNA-repair machinery and DNA-repair substrates to capture the real-time kinetics of DNA degradation and homologous recombination in living bacteria. You will also develop software tools to collect and analyse large data sets generated from single-molecule studies performed inside living bacteria.
The ideal candidate should hold or be close to completion of a doctorate in physics, biophysics, biophysical chemistry, or related field, and have knowledge of C/C++, Python, and MATLAB. Experience in assembling, controlling and using single-molecule fluorescence microscopes is essential. Experience in particle tracking, localization microscopy, image analysis, time-series analysis, and quantitative cell imaging is essential. Experience with parallelized data analysis software, automation algorithms, LabVIEW programming, is highly desirable. Experience in DNA repair, protein-DNA/RNA interactions, bacterial imaging, molecular biology, and fluorescent labelling is desirable, but not required.
You should have a strong publication record, excellent communication skills and able to work effectively within an interdisciplinary group. You will manage academic and administrative activities, develop ideas for generating research income, collaborate on reports and journal articles, and have the opportunity to teach.
This post is fixed-term for 3 years.
