We seek a student for an exciting multidisciplinary Ph.D. project to develop novel low-cost capsule endoscopes with the aim of improving survival rates of oesophageal cancer.
Background: Oesophageal cancer has a 5-year survival rate of just 15%, largely because it is often diagnosed too late. Early detection could dramatically improve survival rates but implementation would require large-scale screening. Conventional endoscopy is unsuitable for screening because it is costly and the white-light imaging modality used provides poor contrast for imaging early tumours. Capsule endoscopes, pill-sized imaging devices swallowed by patients, provide a low-cost platform potentially suitable for screening or triage, but only white-light imaging devices are commercially available.
Aim: You will design, build and test a prototype capsule endoscope that performs advanced imaging (e.g. holographic or polarimetric imaging), using a design that can be fabricated and operated at minimal cost (e.g. 3D printed housing, polymer optics, smartphone cameras). The project is highly interdisciplinary with a view to working with clinicians to develop a clinically useful device suitable for primary care deployment. You will design, simulate and fabricate one or more prototype capsule endoscopes and then test these by imaging test targets, tissue phantoms and ex-vivo diseased tissue specimens via collaborators at the University of Cambridge. This may in turn lead to opportunities to develop the device further towards clinical use and commercialisation.
Desirable skills: You must have (or expect to obtain) a 1st or 2:1 honours degree (Masters pass) in engineering, physics or similar. Relevant industrial experience and a strong interest in the project will also be considered. Knowledge of programming is required (e.g. MATLAB, C/++ or Python) and experience with optics/photonics would be highly advantageous. However, most importantly we seek a candidate with a strong desire to learn, create and innovate.
Funding notes: The Ph.D. position is to be taken up in October 2019 and is 3 years in duration. The studentship covers both tuition fees and a tax-free student stipend at RCUK rates (up to £16,777 a year) for EU and UK candidates.
