The Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest research organization. Its 19 Research Centers manage Germany's research infrastructure and tackle the grand challenges of society, science and industry. Helmholtz performs cutting edged research in six research fields: Energy / Earth and Environment / Health / Key Technologies (Information) / Matter / Aeronautics, Space and Transport. It has a staff of more than 39,000 and an annual budget of about € 4.5 billion.

The Helmholtz Young Investigator Groups program offers early scientific independence to excellent researchers. The funding is at least € 300,000 p.a. for six years with an option for a permanent position in case of a positive evaluation. The group leaders receive professional skills training by the Helmholtz Management Academy and additional support measures.

Helmholtz Young Investigator Groups are generally established together with a German university. Many group leaders are given joint positions as professors during the funding period. 

Apply if you have:

  • ideally between 2 and 6 years of research experience after your doctorate
  • international research experience
  • an exceptional scientific record
  • an innovative research project in one of the fields of the Helmholtz Association

Application procedure

STEP 1: Please contact one of our 19 Helmholtz Centers. The Centers pre-select the applications and guarantee half of the funding.

STEP 2: The Helmholtz Centers nominate the selected applicants to the Head Office of the Helmholtz Association.

STEP 3: The application is subject to a scientific review process consisting of at least two written assessments and a presentation to an interdisciplinary selection panel in Berlin. 


Deadline for applications at the Helmholtz Centers: February 24, 2019

Deadline for nominations by the Helmholtz Centers: May 3, 2019

Selection meeting in Berlin: October 17/18, 2019
