PhD Studentship: Investigating the Nanoscale Synthesis of 2D Materials for Advanced Flexible Electronics

Graphene and the wider family of 2D materials are an exciting platform upon which to build the next-generation of electronic devices. From flexible transparent circuits, to new forms of switching devices, the unique properties of these nanoengineered layered systems have much potential for the realisation of advanced electronics.

Systematic material growth studies will be conducted using the Nano Lab’s chemical vapour deposition reactors with the applicant expected to develop commercially viable and scalable transfer methodologies of the as-grown materials.  The fabricated samples will be assessed using Baths University’s extensive metrology facilities, with the successful candidate’s research focussing on exploring the underlying growth of various emerging semiconducting 2D materials in addition to exploring the synthesised materials electronic properties.

The successful candidate should have an interest in nanomaterials and their application with a preference for experimental work. A hands-on approach and willingness to build and develop new systems and approaches to the outlined problem is extremely advantageous. A background in nanomaterial growth or advanced metrology is desirable.

Successful applicants will ideally have graduated (or be due to graduate) with an undergraduate Masters first class degree and/or MSc distinction (or equivalent). Any English language requirements must be met at the deadline for applications.

This project is eligible for inclusion in funding rounds scheduled for end of November 2018, January 2019, February 2019, March 2019 and April 2019. A full application must have been submitted before inclusion in a funding round.

Funding will cover Home/EU tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£14,777 pa (2018/19 rate)) and a training support fee of £1,000 per annum for up to 3.5 years. Early application is strongly recommended.
