Mission of the position within the organization:

This postdoctoral research position is based at the Centre on Hydropolitics of the University of Geneva (Geneva Water Hub – GWH). As a joint initiative of the University of Geneva and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Geneva Water Hub began its activities in 2014. The Centre is now in its second phase of activities, 2017-2020.

The position holder will contribute to a project entitled “Monitoring for international hydropolitical tensions”, currently under development at University of Geneva, in collaboration with international partners, notably Oregon State University.

The position holder will contribute to the development of the research project and will be responsible for the analysis of two to three case studies using methods such as Social Network Analysis and/or content analysis. 

Responsibilities and main activities:

  • 80% - Contribution to the project “Monitoring for international hydropolitical tensions”:
    • Conduct of two to three case studies including state of the art review, policy frameworks analysis, content analysis and Social Network Analysis.
    • Collaboration on the writing of scientific articles and on the production of educational resources linked with the project and linked with on-going activities at the Geneva Water Hub or at the UNESCO Chair in Hydropolitics 
  • 10% - Teaching activities:
    • Targeted contributions to the Summer School in Water Governance
    • Targeted contributions to teaching activities in the Master in Environmental Sciences of University of Geneva (environmental policy, and water policy and governance courses)
  • 10% - Other:
    • Contribution to the organization of high-level seminars, workshops, public events organization.
    • Contribution to communications and the promotion of the GWH activities in relation with expected goals.
    • GWH management in collaboration with other members of the team.


PhD in social sciences (with a preference for political sciences, institutional economics, political geography, political ecology, etc.) 

Work experience (nature and duration):

  • Research experience on questions related to water governance;
  • Capacity to use Social Network Analysis and/or content analysis methods;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and reflect strategically, and to analyse and judge complex situations independently; and
  • Excellent knowledge of the water sector.
