University of York - Archaeology

Location: York
Salary: £32,236 to £39,609 a year
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 15th March 2019
Closes: 15th April 2019
Job Ref: 7426

We are looking for a versatile and motivated technician with experience in ancient DNA and/or ancient protein analysis from an academic or research environment to join the internationally renowned bioarchaeology research group (BioArCh). You will work autonomously but with the close support and collaboration of our current BioArCh technicians, academic, research and administrative staff, with whom you will be co-located.

You will have prior experience and theoretical knowledge of molecular biology techniques and be able to troubleshoot common problems, deal with health and safety issues, maintain the equipment and interpret data generated using the appropriate software. Staff members will provide necessary training, but direct experience with advanced aDNA methods (library preparation, capture) and/or ancient protein methods (ZooMS, shotgun proteomics) is desirable. This is a senior research-oriented role where you will help design experiments, participate in data analysis, write reports, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and present at conferences.

The successful applicant will have a varied portfolio helping staff and supervising students to work on archaeological samples from around the world to address questions of broad international significance.

This appointment would add to our current complement of BioArCh technicians supporting the laboratory activities of 6 academic staff members, ca. 10 research staff and ca. 15 PhD students. We aim for a start date of 03 June 2019 so that the current role holder can provide 4 weeks of on-the-job training.
