Salary: £27,025 to £39,609 per annum, pro rata depending on skills and experience (minimum £30395 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance
Applications are invited for a post based within the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) research group at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will undertake research and knowledge transfer on electrical machines and other magnetic components for mobile applications. Research will cover both low TRL work looking at lifetime consumption and degradation of electrical machines as well as higher TRL work looking at electrical machine detailed design. In terms of the work on the reliability and lifetime consumption of electrical machines, a special focus will be given to insulation degradation. This will comprise understanding of the phenomena causing the degradation, design of experiments to characterise these phenomena and the creation of physics of failure models that are able to describe these phenomena.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the PEMC Group, which is internationally renowned for research in power conversion, electrical power systems, power device and packaging technologies, electrical machines technology, industrial ac drives and energy systems. The PEMC Group currently has 18 academics and >90 researchers, along with a research grant portfolio of over £35m. This post is in the Machines Reliability Lab in the Aerospace Technology Centre on Jubilee Campus.
Candidates must have a Good (2.1) first degree (or equivalent) in electrical/electronic engineering or a related subject; a PhD or equivalent (or near completion) and research experience in the design or modelling of electrical machines and/or magnetic gears/couplings. A good working knowledge of design tools for electrical machines and magnetic components, electromagnetic FE software, familiarity with electrical machines’ control methodologies, and preferably with practical experience in machine design and testing is desirable. A background in mechanical and thermal design or electrical machine manufacturing is also desirable.
It is also expected that the successful candidate will demonstrate high level communication and organisational skills and an aptitude for liaison with the industrial partners.
This full-time, fixed-term post is available immediately and will be offered for a period of 24 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
