The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modeling in biology, finance, industry and society.
Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work with Professor Ted Johnson on the project “Stirring at the Walls – A dynamical boundary model for the ocean”. This work forms part of a joint NERC-NSF funded project with Professor William Dewar of Florida State University on boundary models for the ocean.
The responsibilities of the post will include carrying out vigorous, high-level research into coupling nonlinear wave models for ocean boundary dynamics to global circulation models, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals, and participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences. The post will also involve undergraduate teaching opportunities, and duties with regards to undergraduate assessment.
This post is available from 1 July 2019. This post is funded by NERC for 3 years in the first instance.
Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics (or a demonstrably relevant field), or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date. The successful candidate is expected to have research experience in geophysical fluid dynamics, and a proven track record in research and publishing in a relevant field.
Candidates will need excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong desire to fully participate in an active international research group in the field. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are also required.
Outstanding candidates will have interest and research experience in at least some of the following areas: the theory of nonlinear wave dynamics, the numerical treatment of hyperbolic equations, asymptotic analysis of geophysical equations, global ocean circulation models.
Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 24-26 (salary £30,922-£32,607 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
