There is a research opening for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering at the post-doctoral level (or a researcher who is close to obtaining their PhD), to work on lattice materials.
The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.
There is an opportunity to invent interpenetrating soft lattice materials which can actuate, for example, by infiltration with a fluid, in order to design materials of any given stiffness, strength and toughness. Currently, lattice materials, such as the 2D honeycomb and the 3D octet truss, exist in a single material on a single length scale. The challenge is to fill the intervening gaps in the lattice with a second lattice in order to improve the macroscopic properties. The new lattices will be invented, manufactured and tested by the post holder. There is an optimisation step of the generation of a multiphase lattice that gives any desired macroscopic stress-strain response, fracture toughness and so on.
The key responsibilities and duties are to conduct experimental research into the mechanics of lattices. The role holder is also expected to take part in collaborative work, contribute to seminars, take part in the research group's activities, publish in the open literature, and liaise with the sponsors.
The successful candidate must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related subject. They will have working experience of experimental solid mechanics and ideally previous research on modern manufacture and test methods, with an interest in materials optimisation, and a publication record.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395 Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2020 in the first instance.
