This is a maternity cover post for a duration of 3 months only. The role holder will be responsible for creation and provision of academic skills services to both under and postgraduate students delivered via one-on-one consultations, classes which are embedded into the curriculum and a programme of power hour workshops either in person or online. Delivery is global to all appropriate Heriot Watt students and staff. Additionally the Role Holder will provide professional Information Services liaison to staff and students in designated schools, departments or sections.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that students acquire the necessary academic study skills required for their studies.
  2. Achieving this via classes and individual or group appointments and, ensuring the content is aligned with the current curriculum for the students’ programme of studies.
  3. Teaching students on exam-taking, note-taking, time management, learning strategies and other study skills.
  4. Teach students in academic writing including referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
  5. Deliver Information Skills teaching which reflect the University’s global needs for students who have the necessary information skills to satisfy the graduates attributes.

Education, qualifications and experience

First degree or postgraduate qualification in information/library studies or related subject (or equivalent experience) or membership of relevant professional body. OR relevant experience working in a study skills and liaison environment and working towards a relevant professional qualification.

Essential :

  • Knowledge of library resources and databases, ideally those required to support subjects taught at HWU (Business STEM, etc).
  • Knowledge of educational practice to facilitate the provision of information and academic study skills support services to students and staff (finding, evaluating and managing information, academic writing, including referencing and avoiding plagiarism and structuring essays).
  • Knowledge of systems used to support and deliver the service e.g. Enquiry system; VLE; collaborate; Excel for reports.
  • Good communication and liaison skills: - you will need to feel comfortable working with staff and students at all levels across the university and also external suppliers/agencies.
  • Experience in assisting students in acquiring and implementing effective learning skills.
  • Ability to work independently to develop the support service and raise awareness among students and faculty.
