Liverpool Law School invites applications for a number of positions as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) commencing mid-September 2019.
The successful candidates will join the Law School’s vibrant PGR community with exciting plans to complete a doctoral research project. She/he will also contribute to the delivery of undergraduate teaching within the School.
The Law School is particularly keen to receive applications from candidates whose proposed PhD topic supports the activities of its research clusters: Charity Law and Policy Unit; Critical Approaches to International Criminal Law; EU Law @ Liverpool; European Children’s Rights Unit; Health and Regulation Unit; International Law and Human Rights Unit; Law & Non-Communicable Diseases Unit; Liverpool Economic Governance Unit; and International Criminological Research Unit (www.liv.ac.uk/law/research). However, research proposals falling within the expertise of any existing member of staff are welcome.
Liverpool Law School has a strong and dynamic research culture, producing world-leading and impactful research in key areas. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, 81% of publications by staff at the School were judged to be world leading or internationally excellent, placing Liverpool 16th out of 69 law schools in the country. The successful candidate will also have access to postgraduate training through the University’s new Doctoral Training College to support her/his research and professional development (www.liverpool.ac.uk/doctoral-college).
Candidates should have an excellent first degree in Law (or a related discipline) and preferably should have completed (or be near to completing) a postgraduate degree in Law at Master’s or an equivalent level. Successful applicants will be required to undertake small-group teaching and assessment marking in one or more foundation subjects of an English qualifying law degree (Criminal, Contract, Tort, Public, Land, Equity and Trusts, EU). Applicants will, therefore, be expected to hold an English law degree, or to demonstrate in their application that they have the expertise to perform these tasks. Previous teaching experience (while desirable) is not required.
Details of the post
The post is funded over a four year period: two years of part-time PhD registration combined with teaching and research skills training; then (depending on successful progression) two years of full-time PhD registration, during which the post-holder will continue to teach for the Law School. Over this period, the Law School will pay all part-time and full-time University fees at the home / EU level (£4,327 FT in 2019); plus a full maintenance grant per annum fixed at the AHRC level (expected to be in the region of £14,777).
International students are welcome to apply for this GTA post. However, to comply with UK Immigration regulations, the GTA scheme must be structured differently for non-Home/EU candidates. Full-time PhD registration will commence from September 2019. In addition, international students are required to cover the shortfall in University PhD tuition fees – these are paid at home/EU level only for the duration of the studentship.
