We are hiring our founding faculty to build a world-class university.

We are ambitious to create a world-leading institution for interdisciplinary study. This aims to be the first university of its kind in the UK.

We are hiring polymathic teachers and scholars, interested to build our innovative curriculum, and work and learn across boundaries.

We are initially looking for applications from academics, teachers or professionals, with expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Applied Complexity Science (with a mixed background in mathematics, sciences or engineering and a history of applying complexity science to real-world problems in the social sciences)

Anthropology/Sustainability/Environmentalism

Humanities/History/Design

Machine Learning/Data Science

Psychology/Neuroscience

Research Methods – Qualitative and Quantitative

We are open to enquiries from people with unusual hybrid combinations of expertise which cross any of these categories and more, but these are priority areas.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity. The creative scope for curriculum design, teaching impact and wider impact within the higher education sector is immense and we will expect energetic and creative input and an exceptional level of intellectual and personal engagement.

You should be:

  • highly focussed on teaching/learning – with ambition to create the best interdisciplinary undergraduate learning possible
  • interested, in particular, to work on a real-world, problem-based curriculum with external partners
  • experienced in working effectively in teams
  • interested to challenge yourself and to learn new things/upskill in new areas of knowledge not linked to your previous experience, and to model this as a co-learner with students
  • interested in teaching and learning a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods and skills
  • interested to see your discipline in new lights and through different lenses – e.g. in terms of mental models, in frames from external sectors etc
  • able to take on a variety of administrative and extra-academic roles in a new university, such as student outreach, pastoral support etc
  • interested to build your own team of interdisciplinary teachers and scholars in due course

You should have:

  • a PhD in a relevant area, although proven expertise, e.g. in industry or government, would also be of interest
  • experience of working in an interdisciplinary context
  • proven teaching experience in the relevant areas - but we are also open to considering new talent who can convince us through the extended interview process that they are the right person
  • experience of managing complex administration and multiple deadlines

Research

We are building an academic community on interdisciplinary principles and we are therefore open to ideas regarding your research. LIS is dedicated to outstanding teaching but we would be interested to consider candidates who may wish to continue with research or have ideas regarding the generation of research projects outside the usual systems. Ideas incorporating undergraduates in research are of particular interest.

LIS is committed to diversity, equality and inclusion in the hiring of its staff, and in all aspects of staff training, remuneration, development and performance management.

We are looking for the successful applicants to join our curriculum development team full-time from January 2020. However, we would welcome the involvement of successful applicants immediately on a part-time or other (e.g. consultancy) basis.

These positions are for permanent contracts. We are happy to consider some flexible working arrangements. Holidays are normally 6 weeks per year.

Salaries will be directly comparable to the wider university sector and may depend on experience.

Only fully completed applications submitted via the Workable application process will be considered.
