There is currently a major drive within the wood coatings industry to reduce the VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels in solvent based formulations. Currently, more sustainable water-based alternatives lead to less aesthetically pleasing coatings due to a phenomenon called ‘grain raising’. This project tries to address this problem by utilising advanced analytical techniques to understand this issue and seeks to develop new strategies to overcome this problem.

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of £14,777 for eligible UK and EU applicants. EU nationals must have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the programme to be eligible for a full award (fees and stipend).
CASE funded project by AkzoNobel (Wood Coatings); successful applicants may be eligible for £8,000 per year top up. PhD duration is 3.5 years, proposed start date is September 2019.
Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to materials chemistry.
