The mission of Essex Business School (EBS) is to offer a transformative education to its students, and demonstrate research excellence that has a positive impact on both business and society. It combines business teaching and research in traditional areas such as accounting, finance, management and marketing, with an intellectually pluralistic and innovative approach to research and academic development.

It currently has 2394 campus-based students, 105 academic and 42 professional services staff, an annual turnover of over £23 million and offers more than 40 courses across the range of business subjects including a full-time and on-line MBA.

Duties of the Role

Dean of Essex Business School

The Dean of School provides strategic leadership and operational management for Essex Business School in order to ensure that it realises its full potential in delivering the excellence in education and research that is the University’s purpose. The Dean is responsible for the financial management of the School, and they line manage the Head of Operations and Business Services who leads the School’s professional services activities. The Dean is directly supported by the School Senior Leadership Team, School professional services colleagues and the Faculty Support Team, led by the Faculty Manager, to achieve the School’s strategic objectives. The Dean will also play a crucial leadership role in delivering the University’s strategic objectives in respect of business-related education and research across the University.

Responsibilities of the Dean come under seven key headings: ‘Leadership and Strategy’, ‘Education and Research’, ‘Business Generation and Management and External Representation’, ‘Planning’, ‘Staff Management’, ‘Resource Management’ and ‘Engagement’.

These responsibilities include: to liaise effectively on behalf of the University through communication with business organisations and leaders, and with relevant professional and accreditation bodies; ensure continuity in school leadership and management and that there are appropriate and effective mechanisms for consultation and communication across the School; lead the School’s engagement in the Annual Strategic Planning Process; and oversee the management of all staff within the School, incorporating recruitment, staff development etc.

Appointment to the post of Dean will be for an initial period of 3 years, with eligibility of re-appointment for a further term. This will include a £7,500 leadership allowance in addition to your annual salary for the fixed-term period. The post holder will also hold a substantive Professorship within the School. We are offering this Professorship on a Research and Teaching (ASER) or Teaching only (ASE) contract.

Professor (ASER)

The post holder will be required to pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, in keeping with the REF criteria; provide research leadership and enrich the research profile of the department/school; and generate substantial research income commensurate with subject area norms.

Professor (ASE)

The post holder will be required to provide strategic leadership in education and professional practice; make a substantial contribution to the international profile of the University through the generation of internationally excellent education, scholarship and professional practice; and provide leadership in ensuring your pedagogic and practitioner research and that of others in your department generates impact beyond the academic sphere.

Qualifications and Skills required

Applicants should possess a relevant doctoral-level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice, and be a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy or possess the ability to gain this at an appropriate level.

Evidence of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; knowledge of the key issues and challenges faced by business schools as they relate to higher education provision; substantial experience in a leadership position within a business school accorded the institutional status of either a department or faculty; and significant experience of engaging with regulatory and accrediting bodies with responsibility for business school provision are all essential.

Professor (ASER)

Applicants will need a substantial record of internationally excellent, world-leading research in the field, with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes. In addition, you will possess an established record of success in securing and managing substantial research grants (appropriate to the discipline).

Professor (ASE)

Applicants will need a strong and sustained record of strategic leadership in academic practice and academic development; an established record of success in securing bids for funding as appropriate to career stage and discipline norms; and significant experience of establishing organisational policies and/or strategies for supporting and promoting others (e.g. through mentoring, coaching, reward and recognition, etc.) in delivering excellence in research and excellence in education.

Appointment to this post will be made as Professor (R) for an ASER contract or as Professor for an ASE contract.
