Tenure Track position in Consumer and User Innovations

The University of Vaasa is implementing its research-focused strategy, centred around a 10 million Euro investment programme. We are building up our research capabilities by opening up to 20 new Tenure Track positions. Our future-oriented investments will create a highly dynamic and supportive research environment. These Tenure Track positions will offer successful applicants an excellent opportunity to build up a multifaceted academic career.

We are now inviting applications primarily for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Consumer and User Innovations. However, applicants for the position of Professor may also be considered. The level of appointment depends on the merits and career stage of the applicant.

Task description

In this Tenure Track position focus in research is on examining how different grassroot-level market operators, such as end users, consumers, producer-consumers (prosumers) and value co-creators, produce innovations.

Rapidly developing user innovations challenges the traditional theories of innovation research and marketing. The basic assumptions about the origin of innovations, key innovation operators, processes, diffusion of innovations and marketing-related issues are increasingly being questioned. Against this background, we have a strong need to produce new research-based information and theories to increase the understanding of user innovations and the role of users as a valuable resource of innovation. This can be achieved by, for example, deepening the understanding of the complementary nature of user and producer innovations as well as the activities of user communities, and the way platform business utilises users as a resource.

The candidate is expected to have academic background in consumer behaviour and/or user innovations research. Special expertise relevant of the position may be connected to, but is not limited to, the following topics: 

  • Users and user communities as producers and distributors of innovations (diffusion)
  • User-driven innovation, users as actors and resources of innovation, producer-consumers (prosumers) 
  • New methods, tools and ways to create understanding and knowledge of consumption practices, and the mind-sets and needs of consumers 
  • Connecting users to the co-creation and development of product and service innovations (co-creation)
  • Commercialising consumer innovations; entrepreneurship and consumer-based business models

The Tenure Track position is research-orientated, but the appointed person will also be expected to acquire external funding, deliver high-quality teaching and theses supervision, actively participate in activities within the scientific community and university administration, as well looking to create societal impact through their work. Duties in teaching and supervision are connected to the degree programmes in Marketing and the Doctoral Programme in Business Studies. The scope of responsibilities will be determined according to the career stage of the successful candidate. The annual working time is 1624 hours, and tasks are agreed in more detail in the appointed person’s Annual Work Plan.

This Tenure Track position is placed in the School of Marketing and Communication within the subject Marketing. The tenure holder will carry out research with InnoLab, our multidisciplinary open research platform. It has focus on open and user innovation, entrepreneurship, and public sector innovation and renewal.

Your profile and requirements

All applicants should have a relevant doctorate degree, as well as excellent academic merits and a demonstrated potential for conducting outstanding research. We are particularly interested in applicants with multidisciplinary interests and strong records of (or potential for) excellence in teaching. Experience in obtaining research project funding as well as high-quality scientific publishing are both highlighted aspects for potential applicants. Applicants will also be evaluated on the basis of the relevancy and innovativeness of their preliminary research plan that will demonstrate how they would approach the phenomena related to the research platform from the point of view of their own research field.

Salary and benefits

The salary for these Tenure Track positions is based on the Finnish University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The gross monthly salary will be about €3,600-4,700 for an Assistant/Associate Professor, depending on the job requirements and personal performance. An annual holiday bonus is paid to all employees in July. Each University of Vaasa employee automatically belongs to a pension scheme and the majority of the pension contributions are paid by the employer.

The University’s Tenure Track process offers the appointed person an opportunity to advance to become a Professor in their discipline. The selected candidate can advance to the next career stage provided that he/she succeeds in the regular evaluations of the Tenure Track scheme. On the basis of the candidate’s experience and competence, he/she may be employed for a fixed term as Assistant Professor (2-5 years) or Associate Professor (3-5 years). A person fulfilling all of the qualification requirements and demonstrating particular merits may be appointed to the position of Professor on a permanent basis.
