Supervisors: Dr. A Green, Prof. N Turner

This project aims to develop sustainable biosynthetic routes and engineered cell factories for the conversion of unsaturated fatty acid feedstocks to furan-containing fatty acids, an important class of natural products that have great potential to serve as next generation bio-derived surfactants with interesting functional properties. High-throughput applications testing will be carried out in collaboration with Unilever plc in Port Sunlight as well as at the Materials Innovation Factory.

This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the cutting edge of biocatalysis and synthetic biology research, offering diverse training opportunities for a post-graduate student in a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary setting. The student will gain broad expertise in organic synthesis, molecular and structural biology, protein expression and purification, laboratory evolution, biochemical assays and industrial biocatalysis. The student will spend a minimum of 3 months at Unilever, gaining industrial experience in a world-leading chemical company.

Applicants are expected to hold, or about to obtain, a minimum upper second class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or related subject. A Masters degree and practical experience in a relevant subject area is desirable.
