We are recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate who will lead the development of fabrication techniques for a new generation of ‘Living Materials’ for building construction.

The successful candidate will join The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment: an exciting new collaboration between Newcastle University and Northumbria University supported by £8M of research funding. Our vision is to develop biotechnologies to create a new generation of Living Buildings which are responsive to their natural environment; grown using living engineered materials to reduce inefficient industrial construction processes; metabolise their own waste, reducing pollution and generating energy and high-value products, and modulate their microbiome to benefit human health and wellbeing.

We are looking for creative, highly motivated and adaptable design-led researcher with an interest in advanced or emerging fabrication processes for design and construction. We are looking for someone with a background in 3D printing / robotics with an interest in possible applications using biomaterials who will work alongside a materials specialist and our Biologists and Bio Design team. Some knowledge of biology is welcome but not essential. As part of the post you will be responsible for demonstrating novel fabrication techniques using our bio materials and develop fabrication experiments which can be applied to our experimental house. Applicants are also welcome from individuals who have experience with building scale digital fabrication and/or experience using bioplotters.

The appointee will join one of the UKs leading groups on Biotechnology for the Built Environment and work alongside Designers, Engineers and Biologists.
