About the team/job
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Outstation in Hamburg offers an international and stimulating environment for structural molecular biology research. It operates three highly brilliant synchrotron beamlines for protein crystallography and SAXS. The Sample Preparation and Characterization Facility (SPC) allows visitors (internal and external users) to apply quality assessments to their macromolecular samples to obtain the most optimal conditions for structural studies. It is hosted next to the EMBL beamlines with an extension to the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB).
The EMBL SPC facility has a strong track record in the development and implementation of new technologies dedicated to structural biology approaches. The facility includes a large high-throughput crystallization platform and a wide array of instruments for molecular biophysics.
You will be trained on different biophysical characterization techniques and will be expected to perform protein expression, purification and crystallization experiments. You will also be expected to provide day-to-day support to the EMBL and international user community that will use the facility for routine and designed experimental services.
You are expected to have a technician degree in a relevant field (biology, biotechnology or related disciplines) and working experience in molecular biology and biochemistry.

Why join us
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family. Scientists at the EMBL Hamburg Unit benefit from cutting-edge technology to accommodate their research, with on-site synchrotron radiation beamlines operated by EMBL and opportunities for collaboration with colleagues from all six EMBL units.
What else do I need to know
We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
