About the team/job

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking to recruit a Coordinator for the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA). The EGA is a resource for permanent secure archiving and sharing of all types of potentially identifiable genetic and phenotypic data resulting from biomedical research projects. Its aim is to provide access to data, to foster data re-use, to enable reproducibility and to speed up biomedical and translational research in line with the ‘FAIR’ (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. The EGA project is part of the ENA/EGA/EVA Archive Infrastructure team led by Thomas Keane, this is part of the Molecular Archives Cluster at EMBL-EBI.

This is a senior position in the EGA group with responsibility for implementing the EGA strategic goals, ensuring the EGA operations are delivered to a high standard, and coordinating with external partners to ensure delivery of grant commitments. Working with the team leader, you will provide input into the strategic goals of EGA and external project funding applications. You will have a central role in driving forward and coordinating project activities between the partners.

Your role

The main activities that you will be involved in are:

  • Ensuring that the EGA delivers an efficient service for key stakeholders (submitters, data access committees, and users);
  • Implement and monitor the delivery of the EGA strategic objectives, milestones, and present KPIs to demonstrate success;
  • Coordinate overall project reporting to the EGA strategic committee;
  • Assist with project planning and budgeting processes including key performance indicators;
  • Effectively and proactively communicate operational outcomes, risks, and ongoing processes to the EMBL-EBI Investigators;
  • Day-to-day management of EGA risks and opportunities, including project performance indicators and the risk register;
  • In conjunction with EGA technical project managers, coordinate day to day supervision of EGA staff comprising of software developers, development/operations engineers, helpdesk and outreach staff (approximately 10-12 FTE).

You have

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  • A postgraduate degree in life sciences, bioinformatics, computing, or engineering
  • Ideally, at least 8 years experience in life sciences;
  • Experience in coordinating the delivery of complex projects with multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrable experience in writing both technical reports and text for lay reader;
  • Experience in planning and minuting meetings;
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills;
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • A proven ability to effectively interact with multiple stakeholders to deliver technical projects;
  • Line management experience for a diverse team of software developers, engineers, and helpdesk personnel;
  • Demonstrable experience in efficient service delivery;
  • Evidence of implementing Agile software development practices.

You might also have

Ideal skills and experience include:

  • A PhD or MSc. in genomics or genetics, or equivalent work experience in a scientific environment;
  • Previous experience working with controlled access human genetic and phenotype data;
  • Experience of processing large volumes of raw data;
  • Familiarity with data security practices for human data;
  • Working knowledge of genomics technologies (e.g. next-generation sequencing, genotyping arrays) and storage/exchange formats;
  • Familiarity with Java development frameworks such as Spring and helpdesk management systems
