Project Description

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Critical to CVD is the blood cell, the platelet as excessive activation of this cell can lead to occlusive thrombi, causing stroke. Although it is possible to targeting thrombi in patients with thrombolytic drugs, this therapy has significant risk of serious side-effects.  Therefore there is a need to produce more targeted and effective treatment.

This PhD sets out to develop a series of state of the art therapeutic imaging nanomedicines or ‘theranostic’ agents for advancing targeted and personalised therapy in stroke patients. The research focuses on the development of ‘smart theranostic’ Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) thrombolytic agents targeted to the activated platelets in a thrombus. The development of nanomaterials for this purpose is an important strategy for achieving critical advances in diagnostic medical imaging and drug delivery.

This PhD will involve the material synthesis of quantum dot nanomaterials and organic synthesis of lanthanide chelates, which will be targeted to platelets within the thrombi. The successful candidate will be expected to have a solid base in synthetic organic chemistry, coordination chemistry or nanomaterial expertise, with a willingness to be involved in in vitro platelet biology techniques and imaging studies.

Applicants for all projects should have a 2:1 undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Natural Sciences or an equivalent degree. International students can apply although will need to also provide the relevant IELTS.

This is a PhD studentship is funded by the University of Hull as part of a larger Medical Research Council (MRC) research within Dr Graeme Stasiuk’s (biomedical sciences), Dr Simon Calaminus (Hull York medical School) and Dr Jean –Sebastien Bouillard (Physics), research groups.

Full-time UK/EU and International PhD Scholarships will include tuition fees and maintenance (£15,009 in 2019/20) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.

Successful applicants will be informed of the award as soon as possible and by 30th August 2019 at the latest.
