The role of Director, Research Strategy, presents a unique opportunity to join an institution at the forefront of research excellence and innovation. Working closely and collaboratively with the Vice-Provost (Research & Innovation) and the Director of Innovation Strategy, as well as with the Director of Research and Innovation Services, Director of the Doctoral College, Director of the Surrey Research Park, and the Associate Deans of Research and Innovation, the post holder will be a key member of the Research & Innovation leadership team. They will have responsibility, accordingly, for representing the University externally, and will share responsibility for driving Surrey’s research & innovation agenda to grow scale, quality and distinctive capabilities in research, its impact, and innovation. They will lead the strategic development of the University’s Research portfolio, including relationships with strategic partners and collaborators, and will support and manage all strategic aspects, including research strategy, research themes, large funding bids and consortia, and pilots and initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have vocational and strategic management and leadership experience in research management, and will bring broad knowledge and insight into contemporary research topics to the role. They will command the respect of the academic community, be an expert communicator with exceptional negotiating and influencing skills, with experience of complex stakeholder management and partnership building. Evidence of managing large budgets and complex bids is essential, alongside excellent programme and portfolio management skills.
