*This position is a Tenure Track position which is 5-years in the first instance, permanency is subject to satisfying the tenure requirements.
The successful candidate will be expected to take up post in January 2020.
The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Modern Middle Eastern Studies. Applications from candidates with a specialisation in one or more of the following will be particularly welcome: Cultural Anthropology, Politics of the Middle East, History of the Middle East. An ability to teach Arabic will be particularly welcome. Applicants may have one or more regional specialisations including (but not limited to) any of the following: North Africa, the Gulf States, Iraq.
Applicants must hold a PhD and have a strong research profile appropriate to their career stage. S/he will be expected to demonstrate an ability to address wider thematic debates and to teach survey courses to undergraduates, as well as offer more advanced research led modules in their area of specialisation. S/he will also be expected to develop modules for post graduate students and to contribute to teaching of an MPhil and a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies.
The candidate will develop new modules as well as contribute to modules in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies and in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies. She/he will be expected to contribute to and to develop the programme in Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations, and the programme in Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures. The successful candidate will also be expected to perform administrative duties as set by the head of department and head of school.
