In 2013, Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.
As part of the University Of Cambridge School Of Clinical Medicine, the Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 350 researchers and support staff with 20 research groups. It provides a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment in cancer research, with state of the art facilities and core scientific resources, and good links with the scientific community of Cambridge.
The primary aim of the Brindle Group is to develop imaging methods that could be used in early phase clinical trials to get an indication of drug efficacy, and subsequently in the clinic to guide treatment in individual patients (Brindle, Nat Rev Cancer 2008; 8: 1).
Current concerns about the safety of gadolinium-based MRI contrast media has created a need to develop new contrast agents. The group is part of an EU-funded consortium whose aim is to develop novel metal-free contrast agents that could meet this need. We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated individual to develop novel MRI contrast media for assessing tumour perfusion based on hyperpolarized 13C-labelled molecules. Experience in magnetic resonance techniques is essential and experience with preclinical tumour models desirable.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in magnetic resonance imaging and must be able to work independently and interact well in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Applicants who wish to be considered for this position must display an ability to undertake project management, method development, data collection and analysis.
